i have an '87 johnson 110 hp outboard, it's been running great all season. in the last few weeks i have noticed that intermitantly the in dash volt meter would drop from the normal 14.5 volts to 11.5 / 12 volts. if you turned off the engine and restarted a few minutes later the voltage would be back at 14.5. now it looks like the altinator has stopped putting out, the voltage is allways at 11.5 / 12. any known common failures in the charging system on this engine? brian

Re: '87 johnson 110 HP charging

Hate to speculate, because the price on parts is fairly high. Its going to be one of three things. The stator coil under the flywheel, the rectifier/regulator assmy. or any of the supportive wiring. Best be doing some trouble-shooting or take it in to a repair shop unless your a gambling man. Odds are good its the rec/reg assmy. but sure as heck if I tell you that, it will turn out to be a loose connection!!! If your inclined to trouble shoot it yourself, just reply and we'll help if possible. . . :)
