[68 Evinrude model 3 cylinder model 55873R]: {not starting} Hey All, well I finally got my manual and some time to actually spend on my motor. I checked the compression in all three cylinders and yeeha, they all came in at about 125 psi [give or take 2 lbs whew. Well now I know she has great compression. So the next logical step was to pull the flywheel and check the points [already pulled carbs and cleaned completely, mixed new fuel and checked fuel pump all okay] Upon pulling the rotor and looking into the points area specifically the rotor shaft I found a most unusual thing, there was this for lack of a better word a tension "crap arm type" spring laying down below the points plate {not tight} but wrapped around the shaft, just sort of free floating with only the tension of the "crap like" prongs around the shaft. Could this have been shorting out something like 2 of the 3 cylinders? to describe this spring even further it's about the thickness of a large paper clip with crab arms type bend and a small 3 coil spring that creates a small amount of tension for the crab arms {the inner arms are worn where they were obviously rubbing upon the shaft}. Does this belong somewhere else in the electrical system? I looked in the manual {exploded Picture} and it did not show this spring anywhere, however in one section it described a spring called the "reverse cut-off spring". I looked over the points and one set looked pretty burned. I pulled the set and used electronic contact cleaner on it and hooked it up to my ohm meter [@200] and when closed I get 001 and when open I get the natural disconnect or 1. {for ref the rotor looked a little dirty but all in all okay, I cleaned it} One question I have is when I was testing the spark earlier I had 1 cylinder with spark [top one #3]and the other two [middle #1 & bottom #2]had no spark at all, I mean zip. I chocked this up to probably points [since I don't really know much about 2 point systems]. So am I on the right track here or could this mysterious spring I found be the culpret in this trobleshooting problem? I would appreciate any other little wisdoms or experience to assist in this mystery. Thanks in advance Denny
Hi dennyThe spring you describe is very important. It defenetly needs to be in there in good shape. The firing order for you motor is 123 Top cyl is #1 bottom #3. I sent you some trouble shooting imfo. Check dist. cap and rotor very closely for cracks. Clean them well, Try to use these parts if possable. These parts are spendy and are not considered disposable (as automotive are).
Hey Alcan, thanks for the tips: two questions 1. the plug wires on this motor are labled #3 [small metal clip] which is currently hooked up to #1 [top] cylinder and #1 wire is hooked up to #2 or [middle] clyinder and last would be #2 which is hooked up to the [bottom] cylinder. {if} these wires are rightly hooked up & labled correctly to the stator then obviously according to your instruction and the manual they are not in the correct firing order. {which would solve the problem of why all of the cylinders are not firing} I cannot find a reference in the manual about which position on the stator/dist cap the wires should be, so how can I test the plug wires position on the actual stator? making sure of course that the true firing order would be as you say 1.2.3. Hi DennyRoll the motor until you get TDC on the top cyl. The rotor indexes on the crank shaft, via slot in cam. The rotor will point to #1. The spark plug wire screw into the rotor cap. The type D greese is diaeletric greese. Some one may have mix-up the plug wires. Check your email, I sent you some more stuff.
Hey Seahorse, on mine the stator was mounted to the exterior of the distributor {I mean stuck} so I went up to the local boat store who happened to have one on stock. {$240} Anyway's that one had numbers above the towers. So I made an imprint of the bottom and numbered them, so when I got home I just redid the wires on mine using the imprint and I put her all back together and yeha, it ran. I am going to run through the tune up/syncro procedure again today and get her fine tuned as well as check the tranny in the leg. Thanks so much for the post, Denny
