Default Gap for points and Magneto setting for 1953 3hp evinrude.

Can someone tell me the settings for the gap on the points and the Magneto for an old 3hp Evinrude. I can't seem to find a repair manual for a 53. The farthest they go back on most sights is 56.Trying to get the old girl running again.

Hi Archer11CA. The 1953 3hp Evenrude you have has a plug gap of .030. Points gap of .020. Champion plug #J6J and a fuel mix of 1/2pt of 30 SAE to 1 US gal. Hope this helps.

.020 should work on your points. I Believe the mag armature air gap is stationary. Be sure the points are clean and not pitted.Though on a motor that old you may have to comprimize a little. After setting be sure they open and close and make good contact. Be sure the whole plate isstraight and not wobbly.Tune up parts may be available from NAPA. Good luck, Spike

Howdy, Archer.I agree with most of the advice above. Don't use SAE 30 motor oil, and don't use a 16:1 mix. Those were the recommendations in 1953, but in 1964 OMC changed recommendations to 24:1 with 2 stroke (2 cycle) outboard oil.By today's standards use any TC-W3 rated outboard oil. You do not need to go any richer than 24:1 and many folks run their 50s JohnnyRudes on 32:1.24:1 would be slightly over 5oz./gallon and 32:1 would be 4oz./gallon.Good luck.
