I have an Evinrude 25HP motor. It ran out of
gas and since lacks power, doesn't rev up
fast enough. I have changed the plugs and
have a new battery. Repair people tell me
on the phone I need a new carborator.
Would cleaning the present one to get the
gook out help?

Hello:
You should not need a new carb unless part of it is broken, Rebuild the one you have. A kit should cost less then $15. and take less then an hour to install, including cleaning in a good solvent. I use OMC Engine Tuner to soak the carb body and jets, this product will not damage the coating on the carb body. Clean the screen on your fuel pump as well and flush your tank out before testing. I can't remember the last time we trashed a carb like yours.
Good Luck, Rob.

Did I miss something? How did the guy on the phone know you need a new carb? Or even that the carb is the problem? Don't go fixing anything till you find out what the real problem is.

The fella must have meant that you need to rebuild the carb. Either way, that's not the only possible problem. what are the symptoms? What year is this motor? Any crap should have been caught by the fuel filter.

The filter could be plugged as it might have gotten all the bottom-of-tank crap in it...

New carb? Ha! Unlikely! Rebuild at the worst... what year is it?
