proper ring gap

I am rebuilding my 40 HP Johnson. I am replacing one piston and had the cylinder bored to 20 over and have a 20 over piston. The repair manual says the ring gap should be between 7-17 thousands, it actually measures 20 thousands by feeler guage. I know this is a two stroke and not a four stroke and there will be room for oil and gas to lubricate the cylinder wall and piston. Is this too much or did they get it right? The old piston has the exact same ring gap of 20 thousands with the new rings.

Re: proper ring gap

.020 ring gap is fine. We are more concerned about the ring ends touching than being too wide. Make sure your finished bore size is correct for your piston brand and your set up. You didn't mention the year of your motor but in general I think you got it right.

Good luck!!
