lose prime 87 johnson vro

i need help i have a johnson 60 horse vro outboard i can get the engine to start but it loses its prime any ideas? its an 87 i think? and the vro has been disconnected

I think that I would disconnect the output hose from the VRO pump then install about a 6" peice of hose on the VRO hold the end of the hose in a glass jar crank the engine over and see if the VRO pump was pumping fuel. If the pump is pumping fuel then the next step is to find the air leak in the fuel hose, or primmer bulb.<br />good luck!
