Evinrude 7.5 will not rev past half speed in forward

This engine will very high RPM's in both Neutral and Reverse. However when I change to forward gear, I only get half the RPM's even the the throttle moves to fill open. I have new Plugs, cleaned the carb. Any Help?

I do not know the exact age of the motor, (Original 1973 ??)

But it has been on our 1973 sailboat since we bought her in 1987.

I had the same problem on my motor. It turned out to be cracked o rings in the fuel line quick connector. Any leaks in the pressure tank or tubes will also cause this problem.

90 percent of the time this happens, it is a matter the motor only running on one cylinder. Check for good spark on both cylinders. Might be as simple as installing new spark plugs. Could be a coil. Won't know until you trouble-shoot it.

Check for water on the spark plugs (indicating a blown head gasket).

Also, always post your motor's model number with your post. Evinrude built 7.5s in the 1950s and then not again until 1980. COMPLETELY different motors...
