I have a 1976 johnson 85hpv4 model# 85el76d serial# j4557029 what should the timing marks be set on at idle speed ? or any speed, moter will run, I just want to set the timing right.Thanks to all who answer.RON.

This one is too risky to try explaining it in a post, Ron. It must be done at high rpm AND UNDER LOAD. Get a manual and see if you can rent a test wheel to do it in a tank. Otherwise call REAL TV before you try it on the water. Aiming a timing light at the flywheel while under way at 3500+ rpm would be quite a stunt, but adjusting anything under those conditions would be worth a spot on the evening news.<br /><br />A good manual is Clymer #736.<br /><br />Good luck.<br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB :)

Initial timing, at throttle pick-up is 4 degrees BTDC. Maximum advance (full throttle, under load) is 26 degrees BTDC.<br /><br />Initial timing is part of the synch and link procedure. . . do it out of sequence at your own risk.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB :)
