Just bought this engine, it's been sitting for five years.Trying to see if it's any good.
No water coming out of engine ports in back while flushing & running / but engine stays cool, carbs leaking fuel at base of bowls(ordered carb kits)& impeller kit.
Are these engines ok?
Anything I need to watch for, or service.
Run in heavy salt water.
I'm a certified auto tech but this is a little bit different.
Thanks a lot. Sitting that long, but still runs is a good beginning, don't run it any more till you do all on the routine stuff i.e. water pump, lower unit drain/lube, plugs etc.pay particular attention to all the rubber gaskets, a good cleaning will also help see or smell anything funky. Good luck, & get a manual.

the 85 is a great almost bullet proof engine with an excellent gearbox.you may have to retard high speed timing a few degrees to use todays low oct. fuels.OMC dealers will have a chart showing what older engines require timing changes or even head gasket changes.
