I recently purchased a boat with a rather old Johnson 40hp motor (1960's -70's). The only reference number I can find on the motor is "342565". Can somebody help me determine what year the motor was manufactured as I would like to obtain the settings (spark plugs, idling etc.) for it.

Monty..... On the early 1960s engines, there is a fairly large plate on the front of the swivel bracket (the bracket that the engine turns within). That plate will have the Model and Serial numbers on it. We would need the "Model" number to determine what you have.

The number will start out with either: RD, RDS, or RK.
