My Seloc manual says that all Johnson 40 outboards older than 61 were electric shift models, yet I have what tags out to be a 66 with a manual shift, could this be a Seloc blunder?

they did NOT say that 40 horse Selectrics were electric shift, 40 horse johnsons in general

confusing ... but likely just a ... case of them misquoting themselves!

Re: Seloc goofed?

Hmmm. My OEM Johnny books show the first 40 in the RD series as being offered in 1960, and the RD series 40 continuing at least to 1964 and thereafter.

The lower end service section of the other one shows both manual and electric shifting 40hp made 1968 and earlier. The pics are definitely of a RD series leg.

Maybe Seloc means that the 1960 RD-22 was the only manually shifted 40 up to the cutoff date of that manual, which I will guess was 1964 or '65.

If not, they goofed and you caught 'em, Ray. :)

Quote from Seloc:
"Electromatic gearcases were used on all Johnson 40 hp units from 1962 thru 1970"
-electromatic shift 8-53-

Re: Seloc goofed?

yeah! see? unless someone switched my transom clamp with another motor, I def have a non electric shift 40!

that beins said, I do think that seloc is the better manual for the two pot OMC's, they go into SO much detail its scary, lol, with the good words and the bad news things

one thing that tickled me was the mention of putting the gearbox into a 230 degree oven, woo hoo, I can just hear the One Woman Wailing Banchee Parade over THAT one, I still havent lived down the powder coating in the oven debacle, lol, boy that stuff STINKS, hehehe ...

But hey, gotta be a stinker sometime in life!

:D
