I have a 1985 9.9hp Evinrude with no manual. It
has been sitting in storage for 4-5 years. I pulled the plugs. One is a J4J and the other is a J6C??? Both are set at 40 thousants. The model number is E10RCOM. What is the correct gap? What precautions do I need to take before I try to fire it up.
Rookie boat owner.

Re: Spark Plug Gap

Hi afrayed....

The spark plugs are not the right plugs. Install a set of QL77JC4's set at .030. Use only fresh premix gas. Mix is 50:1 or 16oz oil for 6 gal of gas.

Setting for so long, I would have to expect that the carb bowl will have some gum in it and most likely will need a rebuild. The water pump impeller is also another item that should have attention. The impellers are rubber and will lose their memory after setting for a while.

If you do try to start her, use muffs connected to a hose to supply water to the water pump. Never ever run the engine without water being supplied to the engine.

A good service manual will do wonders for the engine owner. Got all kinds of good info for care and maint. of the engine. The preferred manual is OEM. Manuals for yours are still available from any Johnny/Rude dealer. Or get the generic. Iboats store have them. Look at the bottom of the page.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
