V4 88 Evinrude 1989
Engine was running fine at restart it popped and wouldn’t start. To the repair shop it went, told timing system was shot includes starter, timer base, rectifier, flywheel, flywheel key. The flywheel stripped out and replaced all parts with used except the timer base sensor # 583379. Engine starts but idles at 3000 rpm and when you try to turn idle down idle goes up. They rechecked timing and no change. They checked compression it is 120 psi all 4 cylinders and has good spark in all 4 cylinders. They are at a loss they talked about getting a new flywheel and trying this but they are not sure and it has a price of $673.00

Eric....welcome to the forum.

When the engine popped and quit, did you see any noticable physical damage? To do damage like your "shop" says, the flywheel would have to come completely lose and "wobble".
I didn't know the starter was part of the "timing system".
I can believe the flywheel key shearing and causing the engine to go completely out of time and not letting the engine start. But this does not call for replacement of all those parts unless they are really damaged. If the flywheel nut was tight, no wobble should have occured.
I would get a second opinion from another shop.

Eric as mentioned above, I would highly recommend you go to evinrude.com and find the nearest "blessed" Bombardiar (OMC) shop, and get the second opinion.....sounds like you're gettin' some leg pulling to me. The only thing I can think of on the starter would be if it kicked back fast, and hard enough to damage the bendix, but that shouldn't require starter replacement???????????

There was no noticable damage, the flywheel didn't wobble and the nut was tight.
does this idling problem sound like something with the timing or is it something with the carb?

I will look into an other shop for my repairs thanks for the info.

I think he meant "stator". Don't see why all those parts would need replacing though. But now that I think about the flywheel, I used the wrong puller on the harmonic balancer on my car once, and found out it was a 2 piece assy. Maybe the flywheel is 2 pcs. and something spun???

I have also been recently fighting with an engine that is idling very fast ~ 3000 rpm (1984 Johnson 90HP V4). I rebuilt the carbs in an effort to cure a low power problem. No cure, but after I got the boat home and started it a few days later, it has been idling fast. The throttle plates are closed all the way and I know all the jets are clean. Just before this problem started, I removed and reattached all the coil ground leads to ensure that they were grounded properly. I was going to start screwing around with the timing, but I honestly don't think this is the problem because it was idling really well before and I haven't adjusted anything. I'm pulling my hair out!

Kenpars

I´ll check the flywheel Wedge if it is working properly, and the control cables may need calibration, let us know about the results.

Also get a look at the choke to see if it´s working properly.

If the throttle plates are truly closed, the flywheel is in the correct place and the timer base is fully retarded - and this is an outside shot - look at the reeds. With the motor shut down and the airbox cover off, open the throttle plates and look past the venturi into the reeds. You may find something in there holding a reed open.

On the one I was involved with it was the yellow plastic piece thats supposed to be clipped on a hose. Pulled it out and away we went.

Good luck!
