Replacing floor in 14 Ft. fishing boat. Planned on using 1/2 plywood in 4 ft sections(4'x6') for 6' wide boat. After measuring, 6' long sections won't slide in due to top rail. Can I cut and install 3'x8' sections? seems plywood isn't as strong when used long ways. Guess they install the floor before installing the top deck. What do I do about a seam running down the center of the boat then to get it strong? Bottom stringers are on 2' centers

Re: FLOOR ?

Yes, you can install narrow sections and join them to form a strong floor. Use butt blocks along the underside of the seams. See this tutorial:

http://bateau2.com/content/view/144/28/

Read the sole replacement section.

Good luck with the project.

Re: FLOOR ?

they also make aluminum panel clips for joining roof sheeting that wouldn't be too out of place in a tinnie

Re: FLOOR ?

better than the clip you can use an aluminum H channel. this way you can lay one side complete. slip the H channel on so it laps all the joints. also if you start with a 8' section on one side, start with a 4' section on the other. stagger you joints, don't break both pieces in the same place,if you are just using stringer, put a backer block under each joint, this add strength. be sure to seal all unexpose edges of you wood prior to instalation,
