Varnish question??

I've got a few wood pieces on my project that I'm getting ready to refinish and have a varnish question. When I refinished my 1963 Sportcraft most of the finish was faded or gone from the wood, but under the registration numbers it was the most beautiful deep red finish. The wood wasn't stained the red color, it was as though there was a tint added to the varnish. I've done some searching, but can't seem to find anything. Does anyone know of tints that can be added to the varnish?<br /><br />1963 Sportcraft

What wood? Mahogany's natural color is red/brown but it bleaches in the sun. Try sanding it.<br /><br />If it is another hardwood there was probably a stain in the varnish.

Thanks JB,<br /><br />The wood I'm working on isn't the off the Sportcraft. Just some small pieces from My Larson. I did a couple of googles and found some info on tinting varnish/urethanes.
