Hi
I'm a new owner of an older boat (1989) with twin 4.3LX and Alpha One drives. I'm in the process of changing the water pumps in the lower units (not knowing when it's been done last by the previous owner). I noticed there is some play in the vertical drive shaft. I would estimate about 1/16".

Do most people who do their own mechanical work on their drives get into changing bearings and re-shimming the gears, or do you just tighten the bearing retainer nut and put everything back together. I see you can spend a small fortune just to buy the tools for the job (let alone the cost of bearings and gears...)

Thanks.
David.

Re: Alpha One shimming

that is normal, leave it alone. if your unit does not have a pre-load pin its a later unit .the gears are cut in such a way to force the shaft upwards . this set the backlash on the gears. the units with a pre-load pin are cut to be pushed downward to set backlash.
