96 johnson 2 cycle 40hp electric start

I have a J40 TLEDS that ran fine all summer. Tried to start the other day and the starter engages but engine would not start. Connected a spare plug to the plug wire but no spark when starting. Any idea on what to go after?

Welcome to the forum.
Does it have a safty lanyard on the engine, is it hooked up?
