How to find gear ratio information

On a previous thread steelspike suggested a gear ratio in the 2:00 range for a pontoon boat. (I think the gist of the suggestion was the closer to 2:00 the better and I'm guessing that this would be analogous to looking for a lower geared rear end for a car or truck.) When shopping for a motor where does one find this information? When discussing a potential purchase on the phone or e-mail where on the motor would I ask a potential seller to look for it? Thanks

Re: How to find gear ratio information

Either on the manufacture's website or in a brochure there is the SPECIFICATIONS section where you can find the gear ratio.

Keep in mind that most recreational engines are normally designed with one specific gear ratio and they offer specialty propellers for pontoon boats. Evinrude is one company that introduced a "pontoon boat designed outboard lineup."
