How do you put .010-.012 between the magnets on the coil and adjust to the flywheel mags then tighten the coil to the correct setting? I know there is better terminology for this but I sure don't know it. I am working on an old 3hp Johnson model JW14.

Appreciate any replies.....

Re: setting flywheel to coils

There are a couple ways to accomplish this.

If you had a coil ring, you would use that, which I doubt you have......so.....

Simply set them so that the laminations are flush with the bevelled edge of the mounting boss, so that if you run your fingernail up the boss, it wont catch on the coil. You want it just right. Too far in and you will limit spark, too far out and your flywheel will hit the coils.

Flywheel is keyed to the crankshaft, so it only goes on one way.

As for points, set gap at .020" with the cam rider portion of the points aligned with the keyway on the crankshaft. Rotate crankshaft 180-degrees and repeat for other set of points. Voila! Done!
