I have a 14' fisher with a 25 hp Merc outboard. It has a side console. When I open it up, I'll be going just fine when suddenly it will jump into neutral. Is there a fix for this that can be done without going to a marine mechanic?

It could be that the clutch slider is worn and needs to be replaced. It can be done by ones with the correct tools and a manual for the motor. Otherwise it is best to have it done by a marine mechanic. JMO

It can also have the control cables out of adjustment or the friction lock out of adjustment and vibrations are kicking it out of gear.

Check the cables at the shifter. You may have to remove the backplate to be able to see the cables. Move the shifter back and forth slowly with the back removed and take notice at how much the shift cable travels.
