Got down to the river today, put the boat in, and didn't go anywhere. I must have sheared the pin taking the boat out last trip. Anyway, it's Sunday, no hardware stores open, closest marina is 50 miles, and no spare pin. The brass rod on the flush handle of a toilet was a perfect fit, 3/16". My motor is a 9.5 hp Johnson and I've been using brass pins in the river, they shear faster than stainless but there are a LOT of rocks and the prop doesn't get beat up as fast. Hope this can help someone else get back in the water.

Re: Emergency shear pin.

I've even heard of people using a solid stick stuffed in there to get them back to the ramp.

You carry a toilet handle around with you?? That's preparedness!

:D

(My Dad had a 1960's 40 hp Johnson when I was a little kid. We sheared that danged pin almost every time out)
