81 Silverline bulkhead question

Hi all,

The forward bulkhead (see pic for location) I removed was U-shaped. I understand the concept of replacing what was originally there with the same but I am wondering if there is any reason I could not make the new bulkhead solid up to deck height and fill the void with foam? The U-shaped section just seems like a space water can get into from the bilge but maybe the U-shape dissipates energy in some way?

Thanks in advance for your advice, Stalmon

I'm not getting what you're saying. Could you post a drawing of what you are saying?

hopefully the attached drawing (rudimentary as it is) will show what I'm asking. the forward bulkhead only goes to deck height at the top of the U otherwise it is open space to the ski locker and bilge. I want to make the bulkhead a solid piece but figure there may be a structural reason for the shape.
