My 1990 40 HP Merc was working great up until today.

I can start it with the idle throttle up but the minute I place it down, the motor shuts off.. it seems to be leaking gas and maybe oil?(dark red color) inside the housing unit and into the water.

Not a clue what it could be!

I think the logical thing to start with would be to determine why there is air bubbles in the line. Think maybe the bubbles and fuel is coming from the cracked fuel line???? Cracked fuel lines need to be replaced. Start with that. Simple and cheap. If that doesn't fix the problem, check back.

so replaced the fuel hoses. took it into the local guys to do a carb clean and figure out why the engine wouldnt start. they got it to start but still wont idle. they did a compression test and the top 2 were 140, the 3rd was 28 and the 4th was 110.

What does this mean now? they're talking about it costing a few thousand to fix.
