I'm posting this in the hope it may help someone with a similar problem.
Engine at first was intermittently losing power while cruising. I suspected fuel problems so replaced fuel and filters, but problem got worse to the point that, while it would run fine in neutral, as soon as any load was applied it would stumble and almost stall. On shifting back to neutral it would idle happily
Cause? HT volts jumping from rubber boot on the coil to a nearby 12v terminal, shorting out the ignition!!
Why? PO or his mechanic had put way too much grease inside the rubber boot, and it had leaked out and formed a lump on the outside of the boot just by the terminal, providing a nice easy path for the HT voltage.
Moral of this story? Don't use too much grease, and keep all terminals;leads; boots clean
