Stringer upper gearcase dip stick?

When checking the fluid level in the upper gear case, do you do it with the dipstick plug screwed in OR with the dipstick just lowered until the stick threads meet the case threads?

This always seems to be a dilemma with these type of things. I thought it was awesome that my Honda Lawn Rider shows a diagram of checking the oil level with the dipstick just lowered until the threads kiss. Clearly not meant to have to screw it in.

In the case of the upper gearcase, there would be about 1/2" difference in fluid level between the dipstick screwed in and not screwing it in.

I do it with it just lowered in until resting on the threads. I remember reading somewhere that this was the proper method, but Im not sure where. I just looked through my OEM manual and it does not specify.

They usually don't. That is why I so appreciated the picto-gram on my Honda Lawn Rider.
