1999 305 - GL50PEFS - what holds the thermostat up in the housing and keeps it from falling down into the manifold - just the rubber grommet??? Just doesn't seem right

Thermostat housing keeps it in place. Rubber o-ring keeps a seal, from water bypassing the thermostat.

Maybe you have the wrong thermostat if it's small enough to fall into the manifold.

That is what holds it. Just use a screwdriver to get it seated good.

Make sre you clean any rust out of the "O" ring groove before fitting it, works just fine.
