Ok, I admit it. I'm an I/O newbie. Got an old Harris Floteboat with a Mercruiser 140. Where is the exhaust supposed to exit the I/O? I'm used to it porting out the prop with the cooling water but this seems to port out a hole on the left side of the gimble housing with the cooling water. Is this normal (rather noisy) and if so what is that new exhaust bellow I just installed used for?

Thanks,
Rick

I have a 1972 MC 140 and it exhausts out the prop hub, and through two ports on each side of the lower gimbal.

Thats correct........It comes out both the hole and the prop. Hole is for idle relief

The hole should be under water...when the boat's in the water and the noise will be less.

Get rid of that bucket and go with muffs to run it.........Bucket will drian to quick.

1985 Harris Flotebote, engine s/n A395906, outdrive s/n A393609

To add a little bit to 81 Checkmate, below is the pic of your outdrive. Item 17 is the main exhaust bellows which takes it through the prop hub. The larger one covers your u-joints and drive shaft.

Since condition is unknown, Recommed pulling the drive off,
Check engine alignment
Seperate the drive halves and inspect/replace impeller and or housing
Inspect/replace u-joints
Inspect/replace bellows (drive and exhaust)
Change gear oil

You guys are great! Already inspected and replaced bellows, impeller and changed gear oil, water circulating pump, battery, oil and filter. Late in the season, but I'm ready to go boating! Sure appreciate all of the input!:joyous:
