Changing fuel filters

Has anyone ever eliminated a carb mounted fuel filter and replaced it with an inline. I have twin 1986 Merc 230 MIE straight inboards. I want an easier way to see and replace them but don't know if it will effect performance or operation.

Leave the carb filter in there and fit proper marine spin-on water separating fuel filters... They should trap any dirty/water and the carb ones will never need to be replaced/cleaned, but are still there in case something (I have no idea what???) goes wrong with the water seps...
