1976 Evinrude 2HP driveshaft installation in gearcase

Hi,

I'm putting the 1976 Evinrude 2HP back together after an impeller change. I pulled the drive shaft out of the gear case and now it is difficult to get back in. I got it back together once, but am having trouble this time. Does anyone have any tips to get the drive shaft back into the gear case, or do you have to take the bottom end apart?

Tilt the g/c at a 45* angle and put a long thin screw driver down the g/c and get the pinion gear in place. Then wiggle the d/s to get it in the pinion gear.
