97 merc 6hp long shaft question

I have a dinghy with a transom for a short shaft. I recently purchased a merc 6 with 20" shaft. It runs pretty nice but I feel I can get a little more power out of it if I raise it. what's the best way to extend your transom? I keep hearing use 2 wooden plans and bolt them though the transom?

Pics would help. But yes you need to raise the transom. 5".
