1996 6hp johnson model j6reds no power when in gear

Newbee here,

took my boat out yesterday and the motor started right up, but when i put it in gear and tried to accelerate,it would't.
I moved the throttle back and fourth and it sped up for a few seconds only.
runs fine and revs up fully when not in gear.

any suggestions

Sounds like you spun the hub in your prop. Your local dealer or prop shop can have it rehubbed.

In gear, does it rev up normally but just not move the boat properly ~ or ~ does it bog down and drop out when you accelerate?
If the former, Fireman probably nailed it.
If not, verify spark and compression, and then troubleshoot the fuel system.

I took the boat back out and the hub is not spun, but now it stalls out when i put it in gear, i did got it moving a few times but it has low RPM's when in gear, so i ordered a carb rebuild kit, any do's or don't suggestions when i rebuild this puppy?

spark and compression appear to be good

clean them good and you should be fine
