I just got a 1989 stratos 201 pro that I know nothing about..From what I understand it 20.2 feet long.. I'm not use to a boat this big,,I'm use to 16 to 18ft boat with a max hp of 90hp..I was wondering what's the least and max hp I can put on this boat..I'm not looking to go very fast..I want to stay around 45 to 50 mph max, but I do have to get the phone on plane..does anyone have any ideas..

Probably there must be a tech plate somewhere transom that specifies max HP engine for that boat model. If not, contact manufacturer and ask . BTW, 50 mph is a fast speed, probably not achievable with that size boat, unless you install a big and powerfull engine.

Happy Boating

not sure of max hp rating but ive seen several on line with 200 hp motors and one in a forum with 2.5 litre merc that did 75 mph.the new stratos elite of the same size as yours has a max rating of 300 hp.

The max plate says 235hp max,,I just need enough motor to get this boat on plane,,with about 2 people and equipment..I don't need to go fast..

you don't want to severly under power either ,you will hate it .200hp would be min if I owned it .ive seen at least a dozen on line all with 200 hp .is this a good solid boat that you would like to keep for a time?pictures are always welcome .bet you that boat would rock with a 225 h.o. etec on the back.

A 175 hp would probably work out just fine on it.

Yep, that's probably about the smallest I'd try too. It's possible a 150 could work for you, but most 150's have the same displacement and weigh about the same as a 175, so you may as well go with a 175 if you can find one.

(Now if it were my boat I'd be wanting every last bit of HP I could put on it, but I perfectly understand those who are more sane than myself - unfortunately I've learned all too well that it costs $$$$ to go fast).
