Yes! Assuming you are talking about a 35-55 HP engine, they came with two different types of ignition: Battery and points with electric start and alternator, and Magneto ignition, electric start, with no alternator. While the crankshaft and cam is the same, you still need to replace the whole system because the alternator takes the place of the points and magneto carrier plate.

Re: adding alternator

It is not too complicated: you simply remove the magneto carrier plate and substitute on the alternator and flywheel. Forget to mention above that the flywheels are different. Then, you mount the two coils either on the side of the block or the tapered portion of the head. Probably an hour's work if you have all the parts and are handy with tools.

As far as cost---difficult to say. I don't think new parts are available but for used, you could retro-fit early force alternator ignition in addition to Chrysler.

Where to find? craigslist, ebay. OR if you are in lower New York State, City Island has lots of marinas which may have complete junker engines cheap. You will spend more time hunting that actually retro-fitting the engine.

Forgot to mention that you need to switch wiring at the ignition switch: Red to battery, Blue to ignition, white is not used except for tachometer signal and the two "M" terminals are not used.

Once you get the parts, go over and ask again at the Force/Chrysler forum.
