1996 3 Jaw vs. 6 Jaw Lower Units

I have a 1996 Mercury 75 3 cylinder. Last week the lower unit failed in catastrophic style.

I am contemplating rebuilding or replacing. This brings up a few questions. I have a 3 jaw reverse gear which seems to be much more expensive to find parts than a 6 jaw unit.

Can I put 6 jaw gears into a 3 jaw case? What other parts would be needed besides the gears and the clutch?

The next question, is a 6 jaw case a straight bolt in to my mid? or does anything need to change? I have heard the shift shaft is different but I have yet to isolate a separate part number.

Thanks for all of your help!

Prop shaft ,shift rod and link arm

Its a straight up bolt on but you have to change the shift rod and arm as throw is shorter..part # 79932A20
