2x4 or 2x6?

I'm re doing the bunks on my trailer, and I'm unsure if I should use 2x4's or 2x6's for the bunks. I can get carpet from the local boat store that comes in 13" width, which would not be wide enough to completely wrap around a 2x6. You think that would matter if I would go with a 2x6 bunk?

What size is on there now? 2 X 4's will work fine in most cases..

I recently bought the boat, and there is a little bit of both on there right now.

Why would you want to completely wrap?

I painted mine and then just capped the top and down about 2" on each side (6" slice for 1.5", 2x stock). I believe this allows for faster drying and a longer life.

Unless you need the extra support a 2x6 will add 2x4's will be more than fine since the contact spot will all fit on a 2x4 anyway. I would look into bunk slides on the tops.

I suppose it wouldn't have to be completely wrapped. I didn't consider the dry time.

I think they do it that way at the factory to save the painting step. It is also hard to get a really straight line. With wood painted black, black carpet and under a boat does a little curve in the carpet really matter? It sure does not to me.
