Hello all prop gurus i have what i believe is a pretty common one for you guys!.
I've got a 78 evinrude 9.9 i got in a trade. it seems to be in fine shape but the prop is dinged up pretty bad and its missing the deflector ring. id like to purchase a new prop from this site and im wondering what pitch you think would be best for me as ive never run this motor on my boat.
My boat is an '83 lowe 16' jumbo V bare bones fishing boat usually just me in the boat. what is going to give me the best performance out of this motor?

The motor came with a 9 1/4 X 10, A 10" should work for your bare bones boat.

I'd suggest a new Solas Amita 2111-93-09 $47.69 here on iboats - good prop.

The Amita has more blade area(better for your boat) than the original prop with a converging ring, so a 9" pitch will fit the bill.

To do it right, you'll need something like a Tiny Tach to read your rpm. The rpm range being 5K-6K, you'll want to be at least 5500 rpm.

Depending on the the total weight; something in the range of 8-10 pitch would be my guess.

Without a tachometer, it's all just best guessing.

Jestor is correct. Better data yields more predictable results.

Having sold these motors, I'll be guessing a bit less than a Mercury guy.LOL

If it is primarily just you and just cruising to fishing holes on reasonably smooth water - sans a boat full of beer - the 10" will work nicely and be a little quieter and maybe a bit more fuel efficient.

If you'll need to slow down often for boat wakes, want better acceleration and more hauling reserve, the 9" would be the choice. The 9" would still be suitable for light loads.

That block will make good power at 4500rpm(rated 4500-5500) ,but you can run the revs into the stratosphere(read 6500) and still make decent power. Prop wise, it is a very flexible motor.

If any of the prop guys are interested, it is a 2.42 gearcase.

Hope this helps.
