87 OMC 5.7 Cobra Oil Dipstick

I'm in need of help concerning my GM 5.7. i recenlty changed my oil and filter. first time, just got the boat. According the the manual, it calls for 6 quarts with filter. My dipstick only registers about 1/4 " at the end. I did find that the previous owner installed the wrong size filter (for a 3.0l) does anyone know how long the dipstick should be for the 5.7. mine measues 21.5" to the cap

OK, Was it That Dumb Of A Question?
