Stalling under load

My 302 Ford boat will run at the dock and putt down the river but when I get up on plane it goes about 50ft and shuts off like it is completely out of gas,so we choke it and it starts again and we putt back to the dock. I put a new water separator on,could it be points or something else,seems to only happen when I open it up and get it on plane. Thx

Sounds more like a fuel starvation problem. Was the new filter installed before or after the problem started? Have you checked the other filters?

I think you have a fuel problem, either filter, or plugged line, or possibly partially obstructed main jet in carb. Runs good until it needs more fuel than your restriction allows.
