1978 700 shift rod

I am trying to determine the size of the shift shaft for my engine,I think the one I have is 20 inches but I am not sure.also when I pulled the lower unit off a small plastic piece with splines fell down,I think it goes on the splines of the drive shaft but want to make sure,I have pics of the shift shaft as well as the small plastic piece if necessary.any comments would be greatly appreciated

i could really use some advice, I am trying to figure out if a 22 1/2 inch shift rod will work for my motor, 1978 700 70 hp,
