Adjusting the running attitude of the boat: fore/aft and side/side.

Downward pressure of the trailing edge of the tabs pushes the bow of the boat down. Opposite if the tabs are pulled up.

Side/side balance can be achieved by pushing one tab down and pulling the other up.

tabs lift the stern, and don't push the bow down much. (trim on a motor does both, via its extended momentum angle) OP, was that a general knowledge question or are you wondering if you need them? Depends on the boat, some boats more or less require them, and some have almost no benefit.

If you have them but aren't sure they work have someone stand at the rear while you are in the cockpit adjusting them up and down -- I've had mine stick before.
