Last time out in my 1971 Ranger my little engine started backfiring thru the carbs. After i got it home and looking at it i noticed the flywheel timing marks were not lined up with the mark on the crank shaft. When i pulled the fly wheel i noticed that there was no place for a key. So i guess my question would be what would cause this to slip. the flywheel was pretty hard to take off. I reassembled and runs great. I know the max RPM is 5500. Is it possible that it is turning to many RPM's ?

Usually, a slipped flywheel is caused by a prop impact or an errant backfire.

BTW, nice job diagnosing it!
