Is there anyway that you can get the serial # off of the motor? Unless he's trying to pull one on ya he should be able to provide you with that information... It's hard to tell from the picture and it's pretty easy to put a newer cover on or paint it up. See if you can get the serial # that'll be the best way of knowing what you're getting.

It totally looks like a 1983 Evinrude Worktwin, a later commercial motor that was a continuation of the regular civilian motor that was made through 1976. Yes, the lower unit looks identical to a 1966 33-horse, and with a different exhaust relief hole it goes all the way back to 1955.

JMHO but the first thought that came to my mind was to stay away from it.

Looks like a clean motor to me, and it is definitely 1980s era. It should have CDI ignition, too!

Looks to me like it is E40RSR and that engine uses points. Those 40s were you basic work horse outboard. I would make sure the compression is good before purchasing.
