Checking Coils

What is the best way to check my ignition coils? When the motor is running at idle, it seems to sputter and very inconsistant with RPMs. I have made sure to supply fresh gas and even repalce the fuel lines so im moving on to spark. Any suggestions?

Harbor freight sells cheap skark testers you could by one for each cyl and start the engine and teat it that way but you will need a test prop or a tub of water because you will need to have it in gear to put a load on it.

A standard timing light will work as a good tester as it will show any intermittent miss going to the spark plug. If light dose not miss but the motor dose then the plug or the plug wire is the trouble. JMO
