I have a 1984 4 winns with a 2.5 liter 120hp mercruiser. I have a problem where when I shift to neutral from reverse it stalls. n to r, n to f, and f to n all work fine.

any ideas what could cause that?

other notes: it is hard to start sometimes, even when its warm. but when its running it seems to run great. could it be a carb adjustment issue? or maybe the shift interrupter? or both? or something totally different?

Re: reverse to neutral stall

Worn lower shift cable.... how old is it?

I have no idea. I got the boat 3 years ago.

All I can tell you is I replaced the bellows when I got it. And the starter last year.

no mechanic in the area will work on boats older than 1988. So I'm kinda on my own with repair work.

Re: reverse to neutral stall

It was an adjstment on the lower shift cable. Adjusted it 3 turns and works like a charm!

Thanks for the suggestion!
