Cruising along today bout 30mph and the motor cuts out and has a hard time starting. After getting goin this happens two other times. I was told the needle in the top carburator was stuck up. ANy ideas how to fix this or does the carbs just need cleaning. Thanks

Teach the top carb needle humility.:D More details are needed. If the needle is stuck up, no fuel gets to the engine. If it gets going again the needle isn't stuck up. Time to get up close and personal with the fuel system, from the fuel pickup tube in the tank to the internal workings of the carb. Got a manual?

If the needle is stuck up... it could be one of two things...

1. It could be a Hollywood needle, or from the Hamptons...

2. Someone slipped viagra into your gas tank.

I agree with Foodfisher, it may be time to pull and clean your carbs.... just did it to my 86 Force, and man does it run great now!

I would also suggest you add an inline gas filter (available at local auto parts store) to the fuel line After the fuel pump, but before the carbs... you may have picked up some dirt from your tank... that can ruin a great day of boating when it happens!

it did get ran completely out of fuel last week so i dont know if some sediment got into the gas line. I didnt know if the needle eventually came back down since it started again ran for awhile and gummed back up. Either way I spose its time to do some cleaning. And there isnt a filter so thanks for the input.

Install a water/fuel seperating filter in the line.
Usually between the tank and the fuel pump. Then check it every month.
Like the others suggest.Install a filter but before the pump.
Wal-mart G-2 or G-12 depending on hose size.
If you have a lot of crud in your tank the first filter will pick up most of the water and the second will get the very fine stuff.
