I am replacing the transom in my 17' 1978 Sea Nymph aluminum boat, and am wondering if I should put any type of coating on the inner side of the boat. It looks like there was some kind of grease or something between the wood and outer shell from the factory. I plan to bond two 3/4 and one 1/2" piece of ply, and then cover it in a layer of poly/glass.Any suggestions will be welcomed and greatly appreciated!

Your idea is correct. No grease or anything is needed. The coating you saw was probably the result of agents leaching out of the original wood.
