older engine stalls when shifting into fwd or reverse

* Mercruiser 140 hp serial #3129102 (year? 73 ?) / Stern Drive MC-1 serial #2073371
My engine has developed a habit of stalling when shifting into gear. Like it's not getting the proper fuel, too much air (?)
I have a GM 2 Jet Rochester Carb. stamped (7040032 2062 1) (no aluminum # tag) I do not know the history of this carburetor., or what carb. kit I may need to rebuild this carb.....
Any and all advice is great to have. Thank-you

Ayuh,.... That, is a classic symptom of a Failed lower shift cable,....

The cable wears, 'n drags, causin' the shift interrupter to kill the spark,...

Oh Thanks Bond-o, can you tell aprox. me what the repair costs might be for a new shift cable and labor?
(boat will have to go to a marine mach.) Thanks.
