Merc 850 Ignition problem (I Think)

When starting boat for season it started and ran fine, other than the proverbial dead battery. Jumped it to get it started (started fine) and while it was idling I decided to swap batteries. As soon as I disconnected the negative cable the engine quit, just like you turned the key off. Now it starts fine but when you release the key from the start position to run, it quits. Did I zap the switch box or what??? Found some bad wiring insulation from the cable plug on the housing to the switch box, which I replaced and it did not help.

Sorry:grumpy: but you killed trigger in distributor.. this is # 1 killer for this type ignition. Loose, bounced off and removal of cables while running gets them every time.
