I have a 1989 v8-5.7L out drive is making a grinding noise when in gear. I have put it up on my trailer and I will test further but need to know which Gen it is so I can source parts.

The way I see it, that year is neither it would be R/MR/ALPHA ONE (Sterndrive) 1983-1990
serial number 6225577 THRU 0D469858
