We are looking at getting a little bit bigger boat. I have been doing everything on my Mercruiser on my own for the past 7 years. What is different with a Volvo as far as impeller, alignment, bearing, bellows type stuff. We are looking at mid 90's to mid 2000's range and something with a 4.3 to 5.7. I am looking for a Merc but if Volvo is not too much different I will consider it.

For the most part, not much different. The impeller is mounted on the front of the engine, not in the drive, so it is quite a bit easier to change. Alignment is the same and you can even use your Merc alignment tool.

In some regions it can harder to find a VP mechanic or parts, so be aware of that.

No more lower shift cables, or shift interrupt switches like your Alpha I.
Ujoint bellows can be changed in 30 minutes or less once the drive is off.
Parts are available from here at iboats in either OEM or Aftermarket.
There are quite a few VP dealers in the Spokane, WA area, so that helps.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it is not something I will rule out on our search for the new(er) boat.
